Beaumaris Castle LEGOThe most technically perfect castle in Britain has few equals.

Dare we say it, an absolute cracker of a castle with classic proportions and perfect symmetry. The last hurrah of Edward I’s massive building programme in north Wales… just a shame he never got round to finishing it!

With finances stretched to the limit and the Scots now increasingly effective in their resistance to the English monarch, his vice-like grip on Wales was beginning to slip. Edward or ‘Longshanks’, on account of his extraordinary height, was forced to focus his attention elsewhere and the rest is, quite literally, history…

Y castell mwyaf perffaith yn dechnegol ym Mhrydain yn ddiau.

Castell godidog enfawr sy’n gwbl gymesur. Y castell olaf yn rhaglen adeiladu fawr Edward I yng ngogledd Cymru… bechod na chafodd ei orffen!

Gydag arian yn brin a’r Albanwyr yn achosi mwy a mwy o broblemau i’r frenhiniaeth yn Lloegr, roedd ei afael dynn ar Gymru yn dechrau llacio. Bu’n rhaid i Edward neu ‘Longshanks’ fel y’i gelwid oherwydd ei daldra anhygoel, ganolbwyntio ar bethau eraill a dyna ddiwedd ar y gwaith…

Beaumaris Castle Lesson Plans

Pre-programme activity 1

The aim of this activity is for pupils to use the WWW to research Beaumaris Castle and produce a one or two page guide to the Castle in Word or PDF format. Teachers can either get pupils to work individually and produce one booklet each or in groups to produce the resources and then collate into one booklet. Pupils will need to identify copyright free photographs and other images to add to their guide.

Pre-programme activity 2

The aim of this session is to encourage pupils to work together to build small replicas of the Castle using no more than 300 standard LEGO bricks. Teachers can either provide the photographs and floor plans of the Castle or encourage pupils to find their own using the WWW. An added activity would be for pupils to use their downloaded photographs and floor plans to produce a PowerPoint or multimedia slide show. Teachers will need to provide the LEGO bricks and boards for this activity.

On programme activity 1

The aims of this activity are to encourage pupils to work together to produce a storyboard and to successfully complete word searches and crosswords which link to Beaumaris Castle. Teachers should ensure that the stories are relevant to Beaumaris Castle and life in medieval Wales. Pupils should then be given a word search or crossword puzzle to complete individually. Teachers should go through the answers with the pupils at the end of the session.

On programme activity 2

The aim of this activity is for pupils to create their own quiz of Beaumaris Castle. Working as part of a group, pupils should be encouraged to use the Internet to help them create a quiz for their class to complete. This activity will help develop team working, communication and IT Skills. Teachers should ensure that quizzes are a suitable length (no longer than 10 questions) and link to Beaumaris Castle and medieval Wales. Teachers should also give each quiz to a different group to complete towards the end of the lesson, and leave time for the answers to be given

Post-programme activity 1

The aim of this activity is to encourage pupils to work together to produce a guide or handout of the Castle. Pupils should be encouraged to incorporate photographs they have taken during the visit to the Castle to make it more personal. Teachers may also wish to include the School logo and other information. The use of IT should be encouraged, pupils may also wish to produce their own art work for the guide or handout. Pupils may either work as a group or teachers may wish to split the class into different teams and each team could produce a guide or handout. Teachers may also wish to extend this activity by producing a multimedia video of the guide or handout.

Post-programme activity 2

The aim of this activity is for pupils to use IT to produce a group presentation that can be given to the School highlighting the activities they have done during the programme. The activity will develop team working; negotiation; problem solving; confidence building; public speaking and a range of other ‘soft skills’. The assignment will also develop the pupil’s IT skills and they should be encouraged to undertake research and more complex IT skills during these sessions. Depending on the complexity this session may require two 60-minute sessions.
